Charles Russell

Founder & CEO

Charles launched Synapse in 2023 after noticing that many of the problems between PRs and the media were actually caused by a lack of specific technology to support media relations, with email not up to the task. He has over 15 years of experience in the PR tech industry, having previously worked at Dow Jones, Estates Gazette and Gorkana.

Rupert Howell

Chairman

Rupert joined the Synapse board as Chairman in 2024. His decades of industry experience have seen him work on both the publisher and PR sides of the industry. He founded legendary advertising agency HHCL and has since worked as CEO of Chime Communications, Executive Director at ITV and Executive Director Reach at PLC.

Mark Borkowski

Non Executive Director

Mark is the Founder of renowned PR agency, Borkowski and backed Synapse when it was just a concept. He joined the Synapse board in 2024, representing the PR industry and the needs of the media. In his 30 year + career, he has authored multiple books on public relations, commentated on countless events in the media, won awards and lectured at universities.

Carl has over 25 years of marketplace and technology experience. An early-stage backer of Synapse, he joined the board in 2024 and formally held MD and C-level executive positions at BT, FT and worked with Charles at IOVOX (Octopus Ventures-backed business).

Caitlin joined Synapse in March 2024 to help power our growth. With a successful career in PR, working at prolific agencies Lanson and FleishmanHillard, she’s passionate about revolutionising media relations, and the role technology can play in achieving this.

Martin is an entrepreneur, accredited business mentor, PR advisor and proven social justice campaigner, who founded the PR agency Propeller Group. Lorna Tilbian is Executive Chairman of Dowgate Capital and was formerly Executive PLC Director and Head of Media at Numis Corporation PLC. She previously sat on the Advisory Board of TechNation’s Future Fifty programme and currently serves on the boards of Rightmove Plc, Premier Food Plc, Finsbury Growth & Income Plc and ProVen VCT Plc. She was formerly a Non-Executive Director of Euromoney Institutional Investor Plc, M&C Saatchi Plc and Jupiter UK Growth Trust Plc. Lorna advises the Synapse board on fundraising and strategy.

How do I register?

Registration is simple! Click here to here and then fill out your information. Our team hand verify all of our users within 24 hours. Once your account has been approved, you’ll receive an email inviting you to log in.

How do you verify your users?

Our team hand-verify every single one of our users. Synapse is designed for journalists, reporters, editors and those in the media sourcing stories. It’s also designed for PR professionals. We have our own verification process, but if required, we’ll always get in touch with you directly to get some more information on your day-to-day role and to make sure Synapse is right for you.

Who is currently using Synapse?

There are over 3000 amazing people on Synapse; all of whom want to revolutionise the media relations industry. Our PR user base is from across the UK and covers a mix of agency, freelance and in-house professionals. Our journalist user base is similarly broad. There are national publications, trades, regionals and freelancers all using the platform.

Do I need to pay for Synapse?

No! At the moment, Synapse is completely free to use for all users, so register today and try it out.

Can you replace my media database?

We’d love to. But we’re not quite there yet.

Synapse believes that journalists have the right to their own data, and that by giving journalists control over their data, PRs will receive more accurate and timely information that isn’t currently available on any other database.

This means that we need to work with journalists to register them on the platform, rather than adding every UK journalist without permission. This is something our team is working on every single day.

When did Synapse launch?

We launched on 21st September 2023 with over 1800 users already pre-registered. Since then we’ve grown to over 3000 users, onboarded national publications and have more news to come. Watch this space!
